EDDIE WOO IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST TEACHERS
Education Minister Rob Stokes and Member for Epping: Mr Damien Tudehope have expressed their congratulations to inspiring Sydney maths teacher Eddie Woo for his recognition today as one of the top 10 teachers in the world.
Mr Woo, a teacher at Cherrybrook Technology High School, has won widespread praise for demystifying maths through his videos – known as WooTube– watched more than 11 million times by viewers globally.
“Mr Woo has been inspiring students in Cherrybrook and across the world with his enthusiasm for teaching and is a credit to such a noble profession.” Said Mr Tudehope
“Having more teachers like him will ensure a bright future for the students of this electorate and the State of NSW,” said Damien.
Mr Woo is the only Australian named in the Top 10 teachers of the world in the Global Teacher Prize, an international award run by the Varkey Foundation. The competition has a $US1 million prize money for the eventual winner.
He was selected from more than 30,000 nominations from 173 countries.
The latest accolade comes just weeks after his award as Australia’s Local Hero in the Australia Day awards last month and his Australia Day address where he called for more recognition for teachers.
Mr Stokes said Mr Woo’s achievements were a testament to the quality teaching and learning in NSW government schools.
Mr Woo entered the Global Teacher Prize after being a 2017 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Award recipient. Recipients of the Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards are invited to apply for the prize.
